About

Accidentally Cinematic is a curated collection of storytelling home movies — private films that were never made for the big screen, yet sometimes feel like they belong there.

Home movies are often seen as too personal or mundane to interest anyone outside the family. But some of them — whether carefully planned or spontaneously shot — reveal a surprising sense of narrative, style, and mood. These are the accidental cinematic gems: storytelling fragments of everyday life that unfold like short films, capturing not just people and places, but a distinct way of seeing.

We collect, digitize, and present these films to preserve their unique perspective — not as nostalgic artifacts, but as visual narratives that can resonate far beyond their original context.

Accidentally Cinematic was initiated by Anastasia Langer, a film curator and researcher with a background in Film & TV Cultures. The first two screenings took place in December 2024 at Filmhuis Cavia (Amsterdam) and Filmclub Münster — with more to follow.
